It All Starts at Dick's

After watching this commercial I couldn't help but feel like I was invincible.  Although Dick’s Sporting Goods is an athletic store, this commercial can relate to just about anyone.  The main point is that it takes hard work to be successful in any endeavor you wish to pursue, and Dick’s does an awesome job of capturing that through the lens of athletics.

Unless you have seen this commercial numerous times, you probably wouldn't think this was a Dick’s Sporting Goods commercial as you were watching it.  Most commercials that are inspiring and motivational like this are done by companies like Nike or Under Armour, and interestingly enough Dicks Sporting Goods sells both of those kinds of products.

The story line of the commercial is laid out nicely because it shows people who haven’t succeeded yet, or are set back form an injury; and what they do and the sacrifices they make in order to reach their goals.  I am an athlete myself and seeing some of the things in this commercial was really inspiring and helpful.

In regards to Dick’s Marketing style, this obviously relates to sports but it can also relate to anyone with goals and dreams of bettering themselves.  For example, if you work for a company and want to be the top seller, you have to work hard, set goals, and sacrifice some things in order to make that vision a reality, and that is what this commercial is trying to convey.

Also, the fact that Dick’s didn't reveal itself to the audience until the very end of the commercial was something I think was a great idea.  The commercial does a great job of grabbing the attention of the audience and then giving them the name of the company who is a part of the commercial.  All athletes now know that if they want to do what it takes to be the best, “it all starts at Dick’s.”

  1. I agree that it's very motivational, but I feel like I'm more likely to being inspired to do go do something physical than to remember Dick's. I think having their brand showing in the beginning and the end of the ad might have been better. What do you think about that?

  2. After thinking about your statement, I do agree with you. In the beginning while I was watching this commercial I really wanted to go workout or play some type of sport, Dick's Sporting Goods hadn't even crossed my mind. If Dick's were to have put their logo in the beginning of the commercial as well it would have allowed me to think about where all these athletes get their gear and really consider shopping at Dick's a lot more than just seeing it at the end. Seeing that brand recognition in the beginning of the commercial could open up a lot of opportunity for Dick's, because for all we know that could have been a trailer for sports movie or new television show.

Thanks for the question, I totally agree with you.

  3. When the man said "You aren't defined in life by the way of defeat", is what people don't think of in the world when they are totally defeated. But they don't hear it, I haven't heard it. I loved hearing it! The commercial made me feel encouraged & inspired and made me wish more positive affirmations were out there for all to keep believing in themselves, in life-in times of hurt ,loss and grief. Defeat of this life will call you in the darkest ways when defeated; but rising up to come against that pain and loss...is being a winner in this race called life of rising again and again after falling. I can tell you, I know. We all have our stories, ha? God is there as well to catch us when we fall and redeem our spirits, every time.
    Fantastic writing Jordan.

  4. Great commercial and nice review of the marketing tactics. I think I have to disagree in the sense that I would not show the brand name at the beginning. As you said, you don't expect that Dick's is the advertiser. I thought of Under Armour or Nike as well. It was a surprise to see Dick's and I think this works better than to reveal the advertiser at the beginning. However, since the message is so powerful, I do agree that the viewer may overlook the brand at the end. I believe they could have improved this message by adding some kind of hashtag at the end to create more buzz. Right now they just announce the name. This does fade off. By including social media and moving the message back in the center I think Dick's could have a more effective campaign.
